The Back and Forth on Boko Haram Occupation

Kashim Shettima

It was a week of dangerous vacillation and dithering on the Boko Haram onslaught. The senator for Borno Central, Baba Kaka Garbai, tended to upset the apple cart when, penultimate Saturday at Dalori, he tried to explode the claim by the federal government that it had technically defeated Boko Haram because the insurgents no longer held any territory.
That was during a visit by the senator to the village where Boko Haram had killed 65 persons the previous week. Garbai said Borno State was shared equally between the Nigerian military and the terrorist sect, alleging that the liberated territories are mainly local government headquarters. But on Monday, Governor Kashim Shettima said no local government in his state was under the occupation of Boko Haram. And on Thursday, President Muhammadu Buhari stated that no Nigerian territory was occupied by the terrorists.

The claims by the government don’t seem to add up. A more plausible situation seems to be that Boko Haram still controls some areas, in addition to its Sambisa forest fortress, from where it launches large scale attacks, like the one at Dalori a fortnight ago.
